Frequently asked questions
Pause Lumiere has been structured to provide optimal time for Dr Em to get to know you and your individual needs.
All appointments can be in-person, or Telehealth, all will receive a medicare rebate. Telehealth rebates are variable, and depend on both the content of the consultation & whether you've previously seen Dr Em.
Please note that due to several no-shows, and a long wait time, full deposits will be taken near the time of booking for the first appointment.
In the first consultation, Dr Em will go through your experiences with the Pauses & medical history, ensuring your preventative health is up to date. If appropriate, investigations will be ordered. These can include blood tests, microbiome analyses & DEXA scans. Through a patient-centred & evidence-based framework, Dr Em will review treatment options with you & initiate them in this appointment. You will be given written information to take home about numerous relevant topics.
This is a 45 minute appointment, charged at $385 with a medicare rebate of $122 for in-person & $0-$82 for Telehealth.
Second consultations will be approximately 3 months later, unless an earlier review is required by you or for urgent results. This consult is to establish your response to treatment, adjust as needed & to go through remaining results and/or preventative health.
These are generally 20-30 minute appointments, charged at $260 with a medicare rebate of $82 for in-person & $0-$82 for Telehealth.
Further appointments are utilised to adjust treatment, review further investigations or to tackle further preventative health issues such as muscle gain, osteoporosis or fat-loss.
These appointments will range from 15-30 minutes.
15 minutes are recommended for single, simple issues or annual reviews of HRT.
20-30 minute appointments are recommended for fat-loss, or if you have multiple issues to address.

Once stable on treatment, care can be continued with annual reviews, or transitioned over to your regular GP. Scripts for established and effective treatment can also be requested through hotdoc without a consultation.
The main hormones produced by the ovaries are Estrogen, Progesterone and Testosterone.
The ovaries produce about 99% of the body’s Estrogen, and about 50% of the body’s Testosterone. It is generally thought that Estrogen and Progesterone turbulence in Perimenopause are the cause of symptoms. Declining Testosterone is also likely to play a role, though this is an area needing further research.
After Menopause, most symptoms are driven by Estrogen deficiency, though again lower Progesterone and Testosterone levels are likely to contribute.
There are estimated to be at least 60 different symptoms - far more than just hot flushes and irritability!
If you’re curious, take a look through our Clinic Questionnaire. We use this daily in practice as it captures the most common symptoms.

We discuss this question at length in Pause appointments.
To put it simply - body-identical Progesterone and body-identical Estrogen are safe for the vast majority of women to use. If you choose to take HRT, you are able to take it for as long as you decide the benefits outweigh the risks. For many women, this will be for the rest of their lives. You are able to stop HRT at any stage, and it is a safe medication to trial.
All women should have an individualised discussion about risks and benefits of any medication with their doctor, and part of Pause Lumiere's mission is to provide women with evidence-based, non-biased information to support informed decision-making.
In simple terms - No.
Average age of Menopause in Australia is 51, and the normal age range is considered 45-55.
3 in 100 women will go through Menopause before the age of 40.
1-3 in 1000 will go through Menopause before the age of 30.
Perimenopause can last at least a decade.
Estrogen-deficiency is life-long after Menopause, as are the health risks this poses.
If you're concerned about the possibility of Perimenopause in your 30s, you're not too young! Identification and treatment can provide significant benefits to quality of life and disease prevention if started early.
If you're concerned about ongoing symptoms of Menopause into your 60s and beyond, or want to tackle the chronic disease risks of Estrogen-deficiency at any age, Pause Lumiere is the place for you.
